There are many legends surrounding the carp, which is most often seen as a positive and luck-bringing symbol.

In Japan, they are a symbol of strength, perseverance and abundance as they are the only fish which can conquer the waterfalls of the Yellow River. Therefore a gift of a Koi is believed to grant the receiver strength.

錦鯉 - Nishikigoi, often called Koi fish or Japanese carp are fish with colours and patches raised and kept for appreciation. The carp originates from China and was brought to Japan by means of gifts. Its first Japanese mention dates back to 71AD (of Koi held by the presumed legendary Emperor Keikō).
